Intraocular contact lenses

Some people are unsuitable for Laser Eye Surgery due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Their cornea is too thin
  • They have too large a correction for the Laser
  • Their cornea has abnormal curvature

These patients can achieve excellent spectacle and contact lens free vision with a Visian ICL (Intraocular Contact Lens) or Cachet PIOL (Phakic Intraocular Lens)

Laser Alternative – Visian Intraocular contact lens (ICL)

The Visian ICL is a lens that is placed inside the eye, behind the iris, whilst retaining the patient’s own natural lens. It is inserted through a micro incision in a 15-minute pain free procedure and has the capacity to correct any glasses prescription error including astigmatism in patients unsuitable for laser eye surgery. Retaining the natural lens in patients less than 45 years allows them to be independent of glasses for both distance and reading.

Laser Alternative – Alcon Phakic Intraocular lens

The Alcon Cachet Phakic Intraocular Lens is similar to an ICL in that it corrects high degrees of myopia (short-sightedness) that are too great to address with Laser Eye Surgery whilst retaining the patient’s own natural lens. The Lens is positioned in a 10 minute, reversible procedure in the front part of the eye, providing superb vision and next day recovery. Dr Genge will advise you on which Intraocular Lens is most appropriate on an individual basis.
